Flu Vaccine Available For People With Egg Allergies

Story Updated: Oct 4, 2013

Flublok is a new flu vaccine, which unlike traditional vaccine, can be taken by people with egg allergies.

The question - where can you get it?

One local family is on a mission to find out.

Ken and Pamela Alberry's 44 year old special needs son, Jeffrey, has many health concerns so protection from the flu is important.

But he has serious a poultry allergy, so his doctor recommends he not get a vaccine.

When the family heard about Flublok, the new FDA-approved egg-free vaccine, they began their search.

"It's important that we do it for our son. But I think it's important to get it out to everyone else because there's a lot of people that are allergic to eggs," said Ken.

While flu vaccine is widely available, they couldn't find anyone locally who plans to offer Flublok, though public health officials say they will consider it.

The drug manufacturer says Flublok will be available by Thanksgiving and orders are being taken for ten dose lots at $32 a vaccine.

It's intended for adults ages 18 to 49.

"About 11 percent of hospitals across the country have ordered, although most of these orders are for their employees. It is available for purchase to all physician offices, all pharmacies, clinics across the country," said Rachael Felberbaum of Protein Sciences, which manufactures Flublok.

The Alberry family has been in touch with St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, which is among those that have already ordered the vaccine.

Another plus to the Flublok vaccine from the CDC's perspective is that it could be mass produced quicker than the traditional vaccine if there was ever a pandemic.

Ken Alberry encourages people to call their county public health officials to order the vaccine.

Make sure you research every single ingredient of any of those shots. Educate yourself. If you think those are good for you. Then go for it. Me? I know my answer.
