Free Colon Cancer Screening Kits Available

A simple kit could save your life.

"Our colorectal screening kits...are available at any of the Kinney Drugs in Jefferson County. They're also available in Lowville, Carthage and in our Gouverneur stores," said David Adsit, regional pharmacy manager at Kinney Drugs

March is the month of colon cancer awareness.

All month long, Samaritan Medical Center, Jefferson Community College and Kinney Drugs are partnering up to give out free home screening kits to anyone over 50 or those with a family history of colon cancer.

Each kit comes with detailed instructions and a return envelope to send to Samaritan for testing.

"I see so many patients dying unnecessarily - some young ones - and it just eats your heart out. It's a shame. It's a shame. And it's so preventable. We just need to raise awareness," said Dr. Daniel DeBlasio of SMC.

Colon cancer kills more than 50,000 people in the U.S. every year.

In Jefferson County, the death rate is among the highest in the state of New York.

"In Jefferson County a lot of people don't think, you know, it's the kind of cancer you don't think about. You think of breast cancer and prostate cancer and lung cancer. But, in Jefferson County we have one of the highest rates of colon cancer in the state," said DeBlasio.

The key is detecting it early.

With colon cancer being the number two cause of cancer deaths in the U.S, having a simple screening can be a life-saving step.
