Free Mammograms Being Offered
Story Updated: Apr 26, 2013
Ladies of the north country, it's time to love yourself.
That's the message of Cancer Services Program of Jefferson and Lewis Counties, which will provide mammograms to women who are uninsured or can't afford the out of the pocket cost.
Annual breast cancer screening is extremely important and, as with any cancer, the earlier it's detected, the better the chances of survival.
The statistics are alarming - one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
"Even if you feel fine, there still could be something there, so it's very important to have your screenings. Get a breast exam. Get a mammogram every year," said cancer case manager Kathy Sochia.
To make that possible for all women, free mammograms are being offered on May 16.
It's for local women who are uninsured or can't afford the out of pocket cost.
The mammograms are being done in four locations in Jefferson and Lewis counties.
"We want women to take care of themselves because we tend to, as women, put our own needs off for our families, for our friends or work obligations, and we don't want women to do that,," said program coordinator Ellon Grunert.
You can find out if you are eligible and register by calling 376-5453.
If follow-up is necessary, coverage for further testing is also available.
If an inability to pay is keeping you from getting a mammogram, call and make an appointment - it could be a lifesaving decision.
