Free Mammograms Being Offered

If you're putting off getting a mammogram because you don't have health insurance, help is just a phone call away and it could save your life.

Just ask Bonnie McCartney.

The 55 year old realtor was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago during the annual Love Yourself with a Free Mammogram campaign sponsored by the Cancer Services Program of Lewis and Jefferson Counties.

"It was caught early and it hadn't gone very far and if I hadn't had it done, it would have continued on and progressed and it would have been a whole different story," said McCartney.

Once again this May, a day of free mammograms is scheduled at hospitals in Watertown, Carthage, Lowville and Alexandria Bay.

Organizers say it's done near Mother's Day for a reason.

"Because women have a tendancy to take care of everybody but themselves and we want women to realize that they have to love themselves and take care of themselves," said Ellon Grunert of Cancer Services Program.

The free mammogram day is scheduled for Thursday, May 15.

Unisured women 40 and older can make an appointment by calling 376-5453.

If you can't make it that day, the Cancer Services Program offers mammograms for women in need year round.
