Marie Ambrose is the Head Start pre-k director with the Community Action Planning Council in Watertown.

She says the Jefferson County Public Health Service has been a great help to her organization.

One example is when Jefferson County experienced an outbreak of whooping cough a few years ago.

"They were very engaged, involved with the children that I work with and were right there investigating and trying to figure out where the disease was coming from," said Ambrose.

Ambrose is one of many people who crowded public health for its 60th anniversary celebration.

The open house had speakers, tasty treats and health screenings.

Representatives say public health's success is all because of its employees.

"It's been past and present, very dedicated staff that have kept up with the evolving healthcare environment and constantly looking to improve our services and promote additional services," said Ginger Hall, public health director.

Public health offers a variety of preventive and health promotion services, with a focus on people who are uninsured or underinsured.

"They need to be applauded for all the work they do to keep up with the latest and the newest and all the compassionate care that they provide for all our friends and neighbors," said Assemblywoman Addie Russell (D. - 116th District).

Public Health says it's looking forward to continuing that work for the years to come.

It has already started to team up with other health agencies in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties to help address the needs of the community.
