Morning Checkup: New Technology In Cataract Surgery

Story Updated: Jun 5, 2013

Cataracts are the most common cause of blindness in the country.

Dr. Noaman Sanni of the Center for Sight explains that because of the improved technology and decreased risk of surgery, people are having their cataracts removed  in their 30s and 40s instead of waiting until they're older.
Many people, he said, don't need glasses after surgery before. When cataracts are removed, they're replaced with implants that, in the past, helped people see long distance.
Newer implants, he said, can help people see up close, at medium distance and at long distance.
Nine out of 10 people, he said, don't need glasses for the rest of the lives after the surgery
