Opening Day Tuesday For Health Insurance Shopping

Story Updated: Sep 30, 2013

If you have unaffordable health coverage, are uninsured, or just want to weigh your options, come Tuesday you can.

The Health Insurance Marketplace will be open for business.

"People will be able to clearly compare one plan against another plan and decide what level of coverage is appropriate for their family," said Donna Hynes of the North Country Prenatal/Perinatal Council.

Open enrollment is part of the Affordable Care Act.

Locally, people will be able to sign up online through the New York State of Health, on the phone, or even in person with marketplace navigators like Katrina Kapustay.

"It's going to be a very big transition, so what we're here to do is just prepare everyone, to calm them down, and let them know that everything is going to be okay and if they have any questions, we'll answer them for them," said Kapustay.

There are four levels of health plans that vary based on cost and benefits and range from the so-called bronze plan, which is the cheapest, to platinum, being the most expensive.

All are options for people like Kyle Salaun, a freshman at Jefferson Community College, to consider when signing up for coverage they say they need.

"Health care would at least provide for me and help me get back on my feet if I were to be in a situation that I couldn't provide for myself," said Salaun.

Enrollment will be open for six months.

Summaries of the different health plans, costs and benefits can be found on the New York State of Health website.
