Organ Donation And The Law

Story Updated: May 8, 2012

There's a tremendous need for organ and tissue donors in New York.

While the state has 10,000 people on transplant lists, the third highest number in the country, New York has the third lowest rate of donation in the nation.

Attorney Anthony Marrone appeared on 7 News at Noon on Monday to discuss the law and organ donation.

He says you can sign up to be a donor when obtaining or renewing a driver's license, registering to vote or by visiting the New York State Donate Life Registry.

Facebook, which recently teamed up with Donate Life America, is offering a new feature on the social networking site that makes it easier to register.

However, Marrone says New York's laws are more complicated than other states and signing up through Facebook is easier said than done.
