Tax Credits Under Health Care Reform

Story Updated: Nov 7, 2013

As health care reform continues to unfold, how many Americans will be able to take advantage of the tax credits that may make insurance affordable?

Now, for the first time, we're starting to get an idea.

The non-profit, non-partisan group, the Kaiser Family Foundation, is out with a state-by-state estimate.

It says that in New York, about 1.1 million people can enroll for insurance through the state's online exchange.

Of those, nearly 800,000 will be eligible for tax credits.

The tax credits can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand.

"The amount of the tax credit will depend on several factors including where you live and what your income is," said Cynthia Cox of the foundation.

The Kaiser Family Foundation website and the state's online exchange both have subsidy calculators so you can get an idea how much your tax credits could be.
