Tips To Beat The Holiday Blues

Tools

We may be surrounded by joy during the holiday season, but sometimes feeling joyous isn't quite so easy.

Psychologist Dr. Cynthia Maguire says feelings of sadness or stress isn't unusual.

She says lowering expectations and taking care of basics can help.

"Don't stop doing exercise. Don't stop eating correctly. Make sure you're getting enough sleep," she said.

Loneliness or missing a loved one can add to those feelings of sadness.

Maguire says it's important to avoid isolation and set your priorities.

"Check in with the things that really matter to you instead of the things that you think you should be doing or other people are doing," she said.

Maguire says not to be afraid to reach out for help whether it's a family member, a friend - even of the canine variety - or a professional.

One final piece of advice - wearing yourself out during the holidays can make you feel even worse.

So it's imporant to realize that sometimes you have to just say no.
