Tomorrow's Health: Training Can Help ADHD Kids Focus

Story Updated: Feb 18, 2014

Specialized training could help kids with ADHD.

Also, our report looks at the long-lasting effects of bullying and how loneliness can be bad for your health.

Help For ADHD

A new study in the journal Pediatrics finds children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can improve their ability to focus by using specialized computer training at school.

The training involved neurofeedback, in which the computer shows and tells children in real time whether or not they are staying on task.

Researchers say neurofeedback can actually change children's brainwave patterns.

Lasting Effects Of Bullying

Another study in Pediatrics shows the physical and mental health effects of bullying linger long after the actual bullying stops.

Over 4,000 children were surveyed three times -- in the fifth, seventh and 10th grades. Researchers found children who were no longer bullied showed signs of depression and had lower self worth.

Loneliness & Health

Extreme loneliness can increase an older person's chances of premature death by 14 percent, according to research at the University of Chicago.

A psychology professor conducted the study that found the impact of loneliness is nearly as strong at the impact of poverty, which increases the chances of dying by 19 percent.

Health issues linked to severe loneliness include lack of sleep, high blood pressure and depression.

I just read your article: Training-Can-Help-ADHD-Kids-Focus and we totally agree. We are using Play Attention and are over the moon with it. We read the full abstract and learned that Play Attention was one of the study groups which made fireworks go off. My tyke is right as rain and is up to age level in school now, we have had sleep overs and have not only learned so much about him but about ourselves as well as parents, spouses and family. Chaps, this made my day!
