Tomorrow's Health: Cost Of Dementia On The Rise

Tools

Story Updated: Apr 16, 2013

The cost of caring for people with dementia is on the rise.

A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that dementia is now more costly than heart disease and cancer.

Research shows treating and caring for people with dementia in the U.S. costs up to $215 billion a year.

The average expense for a family caring for a loved one is around $50,000 a year.

It's estimated that more than five million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer's diseases and other forms of dementia.

Risk From Baldness

Some bald men could be at an increased risk for coronary heart disease.

Researchers analyzed more than 800 studies published over decades.

They found men who lose most of their hair are 32 percent more likely to develop heart problems.

The risk is greatest for men with a bald spot on top of their heads.

Scientists aren't sure how the two are linked, but suggest baldness may indicate insulin resistance, which is a precursor to diabetes.

Also, baldness could mean an increased sensitivity to testosterone.

Increased Melanoma In Children

Cases of malignant melanoma in light-skinned children are going up.

A new study in the journal Pediatrics shows between 1973 and 2009 more than 1,200 Caucasian children were diagnosed with the disease.

The overall rate of pediatric melanoma went up about 2 percent a year.

Some doctors blame the increased use of tanning beds.

I am a Senior citizen (almost 80) I am going to blame the seniors on this issue, here is why 1. We are still waiting for Billion dollar big pharma drug makers to "give" them a drug to stop the illness. Big Pharma wants money and does not care about you 2. Too often Families do nothing but accept an Alzheimer's diagnoses but do not attempt to use natural cures. Instead they feel sorry for themselves or their loved ones 3. Walks for the cure are a waste of time to make money, take the illness into your own hands just google "MAL ALZHEIMER"
