Your Health: Holiday Season Do's & Don'ts For Diabetics

When it comes to eating during the holiday season, the word to live by is "moderation."

For diabetics that's especially true.

With the rise in obesity in this country, the number of diabetics is reaching epidemic proportions.

Changes in habits, especially diet, is key to keep the condition under control.

Experts recommend that the consumption of certain foods be kept limited.

"Foods that are rich in simple carbs - desserts, soft drinks, white refined rices, breads, pasta - those sort of things," said Chris Jewett, a registered nurse and certified diabetic educator.

Avoiding those foods can be even more of a challenge during the holidays.

Jewett says that with a little planning it can be done.

"If you're going to go to a party tonight, have a healthy breakfast. Have a healthy lunch. Have an idea of what you're going to have when you go. Decide that you're going to have some vegetables, some low-carb snacks, cheeses, that sort of thing. If you're going to have a dessert, go ahead and have that dessert, but have one small piece," she said.

Jewetts says drinking should be kept to a minimum as well because alcohol has a lot of carbohydrates. 

The best advice this holiday season if you're diabetic, and even if you're not - eat drink and be merry in moderation.
