Your Health: The Dangers Of Shaking A Baby

Story Updated: Mar 28, 2013

Family Counseling Services of Northern New York uses computerized baby simulators for parenting education.

The most recent addition to its nursery is a model that graphically depicts shaken baby syndrome.

Parenting education includes how to safely handle newborns and understand their needs.

Family Counseling Services has doll-like computerized baby simulators in both classes and one-on-one sessions.

"Our intent is that people who are expecting a child or even people who are thinking of babysitting, taking care of infants, take this type of a program," said Collene Dare Alexander, chief executive officer of the agency.

The agency now has a simulator designed specifically to demonstrate the dangers of shaking a baby.

The device cries like an infant.

Points in the simulated baby's brain light up as the shaking becomes more violent.

The shaken baby syndrome demonstration is available by request for civic groups, hospitals and schools.

If you would like more information on the parenting education available, you can call Family Counseling Services at 782-4483.
