Everyday Green: No Impact Project
Tools
Story Updated: Oct 19, 2009
Although I’d promised to talk about eating less beef this week, I just discovered a wonderful experiment that’s happening right now and I want to make you aware of it. It’s called “No Impact Project” (www.noimpactproject.org) and it’s based on a year in the life of Colin Beavan and his family as they attempted to live making no impact on the environment. (www.noimpactman.com).
To quote the “no impact project” website “For one year, Colin Beavan and his family unplugged from the electrical grid, produced no trash, traveled exclusively by foot or bike, bought nothing but food (and all of it locally grown). By the end, they discovered something surprising: living simply wasn’t just good for the environment; it made them healthier, happier and richer in ways they’d never expected.” By the way, they did this in New York City.
Then the site asks the question “What do you want?”
The purpose of the no impact project is to empower us through lifestyle changes, community action and environmental political action, to improve our lives and lower our impact on the environment. For this week, starting Sunday, October 18, they are running a challenge to everyone to try some of Colin’s strategies. . If you sign up on the website under “Try the experiment” you will get an email every day telling you what the focus is for that day. Today, Monday, for example is “trash day.” Become more aware of your trash, how it’s created and where it goes. The experiment runs for a week.
Go check it out. I think you will find it thought provoking and fun. Next week we will talk about eating less beef, and meat in general.
