Benefit Held to Help Car Crash Victim

The Carthage community came together Sunday to help a neighbor in need through a benefit at the American Legion for Justin Runkles.

In March, a car accident took his wife Jennifer's life and left Justin with severe injuries.

But the mood was upbeat at Sunday's event as attendees enjoyed music, food, raffles, and an auction.

Organizers said they wanted to do something big to help Runkles and his family.

"I said we need to do a benefit. You know, people sending cards to the family is nice and everything, but we need to get together as a community, pull it together, just to cover anything that they need," said Jill Fraser.

"Everybody can always pull together and make something like this happen," said Jacqueline Soukup.

"It's just a great little community to live in," she added.

The event raised $25,000, which will help Justin pay for medical bills as he recovers from his injuries.
