Gilbert to Run for Congress

It's official, Joe Gilbert, the emergency services director for Saint Lawrence County, has decided to challenge North country Congressman Bill Owens for his seat in Washington.

Gilbert already announced that he was interested in running. At a small event in Morley Saturday afternoon he made it official. Gilbert says he is a member of the Tea Party movement and is seeking the Republican nomination. He is a retired Army military intelligence officer and grew up in Saint Lawrence county. Gilbert says he is pro-life, pro-second amendment and decided to run because he thinks the country is headed in the wrong direction.

"Whether it's our gun rights and our second amendment. Whether it's our fourth amendment rights and the NSA... We need somebody that will stand up to the American people, will stand up to the people of the 21st century. Try to bring us prosperity and when the government goes astray, we need someone who is going to scream from the rooftops and say, 'no, you are not going to do this anymore,'" said Gilbert in a phone interview Saturday.

Gilbert says he can't tell us right now whether he will step down from his position as emergency services director during the campaign.
