North Country Priest Celebrates 25 Years
It is said that one good priest can make all the difference. And by the look of it at Holy Family in Watertown this Sunday morning, Father Stephen Murray is a good priest.
The church was packed as if it was a Holy Day of Obligation, to celebrate Murray's 25th year in the priesthood. The Ogdensburg native has been at Holy Family in Watertown for 11 years. It was noted on Sunday, Father Murray's story is a unique one. After graduating from LeMoyne, he went to New York City and was a buyer for Saks 5th avenue and apparently a pretty good one. But at the age of around 30, he heard the call, gave it all up, and he's never looked back.
"Usually as a priest, you don't feel worthy, to be called to do what you do. But you know that it's God's grace that helps you to do it. And then if you allow the Holy Spirit to shine through you, you can do wonderful things for God and for God's people," said Murray.
The Bishop, Terry LaValley was one of Murray's classmates and is also celebrating his 25th anniversary in the priesthood this week.
