Sales Tax at 8% in St. Lawrence County Starting Sunday

Tools

Starting Sunday, shoppers in St. Lawrence County were charged an extra one percent on most things they purchase.

The sales tax has increased from 7 percent to 8 percent. After a long battle with the state, the St. Lawrence County legislature was able to raise the county sales tax earlier this year..

St. Lawrence County's share of the tax is now 4 percent instead of 3 percent. (The remainder is the state's share.)  As part of the deal with the state, the county had to lower property taxes, which it did.

Legislator Fred Morrill says that he has not heard much complaining about the extra one percent yet.

"I think there would be more complaining, if we didn't lower property taxes like we promised," said Morrill, District 6. Morrill also noted that some were worried about consumers traveling to Jefferson county when buying a car to save. But he says, St. Lawrence County receives the sales tax anyway if the car is registered in the county.
