The 10th Mountain Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team is one of three major units headed to Afghanistan this winter, according to a press release issued by the Fort Drum Public Affairs office Friday night.

Roughly 1,400 soldiers will depart in early 2013.

The 1st BCT " has been given the mission to deploy to Afghanistan as a Security Force Assistance Brigade," according to the statement.

"Their primary role is to advise Afghan units and help them achieve levels of proficiency where they can lead and conduct independent security operations."

“The Warrior Brigade is fully prepared for our upcoming deployment to Afghanistan,” said Col. Stephen Michael, commander of the 1st BCT.
