The top U.S. and NATO Commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, says that the situation in Afghanistan is serious and growing worse.

In a confidential summary report sent to Defense Secretary Robert Gates last month, McChrystal stated that without more forces on the ground, the U.S. risks failure in Afghanistan.

His assessment of the war was published on the Washington Post's web site, with some portions held back at the goverment's request.

McChrystal wrote that "although considerable effort and sacrifice have resulted in some progress, many indicators suggest the overall effort is deteriorating".

President Obama is reviewing the report as he is trying to decide whether to send more U.S. troops to Afghanistan.
