Report: Drum Soldier Shot, Wounded by Afghan Police Officer
A 10th Mountain Division soldier was shot and wounded by an Afghan police officer Friday, in an attack that killed two other soldiers. The Reporter, a newspaper in Vacaville, California, reported on its web site Tuesday that Staff Sergeant Christian Hughes was one the soldiers ambushed by an Afghan police officer on patrol with them. The newspaper said Sgt. Hughes is at Walter Reed hospital, where he is being treated for a leg injury. Hughes' grandfather told the newspaper Hughes had joked about the loyalties of the Afghan police force. "He said we're training them and arming them to kill us," the grandfather said. (The entire story - which is well worth reading - can be found here.) It remained unclear Tuesday whether a 10th Mountain Division soldier killed in Afghanistan Friday - Sgt. Aaron Smith of Manhattan, Kansas - was one of the two soldiers killed by the police officer. |
