He was an ally for over 5 years, but in a split second he became the number one enemy that Colonel David Haight and the rest of the 3rd Brigade Spartans want caught before they leave in December.

An Afghan police officer turned on U.S. soldiers in early October while on patrol and killed a Fort Drum soldier, Sergent Aaron Smith, 25, and an MP, Private First Class Brandon Owens, from Fort Bragg, NC.

The shooter escaped and is still at large.

Colonel David Haight says that all resources can't go to finding the killer, but he is hopeful the man will be captured.

Haight admitted that in Afghanistan, it is hard to know who the enemy is and with so many temptations to turn traitor on U.S. forces (including money from the Taliban, threats against family) the reasons the Afghan police officer turned may never be known.
