President Obama is considering a request to send 40,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. While nothing is official, newspaper reports over the weekend say the Fort Drum's 1st Brigade Combat Team is going to deploy there. "I don't know anything more or less than you do. This division headquarters is aligned to go to Afghanistan in spring of 2011 and we're headed that way," said Fort Drum Commander Major General James Terry. Some 3,500 members of the 1st BCT were getting ready to go to Iraq in January, but that mission was cancelled last month. "We're pretty flexible kinds of folks. We get orders. We plan accordingly. Sometimes we'd like to have a little more time. Sometimes we don't get it, but we always execute and seem to do very well," said General Terry. But with so many soldiers going overseas, there is growing concern troops won't have enough time at home between deployments. "I think our forces across the Army are concerned about dwell time. We are an Army at war. I support the chief's desire to get us in balance," said Terrry. There's a plan right now to allow troops two years at home for every year deployed. General Terry says he hopes that will be in place by 2011 or 2012. While soldiers in the 1st BCT await new orders possibly sending them to Afghanistan, a spokesperson for President Obama says a final decision on whether or not to send additional troops could still be weeks away. |
