President Obama will not accept any of the current options to add more troops to the war in Afghanistan, the Associated Press reported Wednesday night. Instead, the President is seeking 'clarification' about the U.S. mission there - when U.S. troops could begin to turn over responsibility to the Afghan government, and whether that government is still credible. According to the AP: Administration officials said Wednesday that Obama wants to make it clear that the U.S. commitment in Afghanistan is not open-ended. The war is now in its ninth year and is claiming U.S. lives at a record pace as military leaders say the Taliban has the upper hand in many parts of the country. The options presented to Obama by his war council are now likely to be amended. The report Wednesday arose from a meeting between the President and his 'war council.' President Obama has a series of options before him, and was said (in reports last weekend) to favor sending 30,000 more troops to the country - including the 10th Mountain Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team. By not accepting any option without getting clarification of the U.S. mission, it appears President Obama is upending the debate over the war in Afghanistan, from the simple question of 'how many' to the much more complicated question of 'what will work.' Also Wednesday, the Washington Post reports the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan is "expressing deep concerns" about sending more troops to the country, because of corruption and mismanagement in the Afghan government.
