Nearly 600 soldiers are making their way home to the North Country this weekend, marking the end of a year-long deployment in Afghanistan for the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team. Hundreds of families gathered Saturday on post to finally greet their soldiers. "I'm so excited. I've been waiting since Thursday night," says Marilo Donida. Donida brought her babies and her mother, a woman who left the Philippines six months ago to wait here with her daughter for this. For three generations of a family that's back together after a year apart, Sgt. Salvadore Donida sums it up. "It's pretty euphoric actually," he says. Thousands of families know what the moment means. They have been through a lot. About 3,000 members of the 3rd BCT are already home. The brigade will likely spend a year here in the North Country before its next deployment. Most Popular |
