Army Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing Near Evans Mills

A Fort Drum helicopter on a training mission made an emergency landing near Evans Mills Thursday morning after it developed mechanical problems.

Jefferson County emergency dispatchers say they received a call from Fort Drum shortly after 11 a.m. saying an Apache helicopter with transmission problems was trying to land on the Army post.

It instead landed at a field off State Route 37.

Army officials say the crew saw warning lights in the cockpit and heard someting out of the ordinary.

Dispatchers say two crew members were on board and no one was injured.

"Unfortunately, like your car, machines break from time to time. That's what we're dealing with right now," said Captain Peter Smedberg, public affairs officer.

The plan is to make repairs and fly the chopper back to Fort Drum.
