Budget Woes Won't Stop Fort Drum Celebrations

Despite the fiscal restraints resulting from sequestration, Fort Drum says the 2013 Riverfest and Mountainfest celebrations will go on as planned.

(Sequestration refers to cuts to federal spending.)

The events are sponsored by many supporters from the community.

"It is a testament to the incredible support of our community and corporate sponsors that we are able to continue to celebrate our annual Mountainfest and Riverfest events. These sponsors have enabled Fort Drum to recognize the hard work and contributions made by our Soldiers, Families, civilians and neighbors over the last year," said Fort Drum Garrison Commander Colonel Gary Rosenberg in a news release.

With the 1st and 2nd Brigade Combat Teams and the 10th Combat Aviation brigade currently deployed, and several units preparing to deploy in the near future, Rosenberg said the events offer more than entertainment to soldiers and families.

"The wellness found in connecting with our loved ones, neighbors and supporters during times of rest and celebration directly contributes to our ability to execute the mission when we are once again called upon," said Rosenberg.

While Riverfest is geared specifically for soldiers and families, all members of the community are invited to Mountainfest held on Division Hill, June 26 starting at 1 p.m.

There will be military equipment displays, food and drinks, games, a pay-as-you-play Adventure Zone that will offer ATV rides, archery, paintball, bounce houses and a rock climbing wall.

The Salute to the Nation will start at 5 p.m. with a patriotic rank and file display honoring each state in the union and its territories.

The Salute to the Nation will be immediately followed by a free concert.

Opening acts will be the 2013 North Country Idol winner - Corey Walts, Syracuse's newest rock band - Scars N' Stripes, and headliner, with six albums to his credit including "This Ole Boy" country music star - Craig Morgan.

A fireworks display will immediately follow the concert.
