Family Reports Fort Drum Soldier Missing

The family of a Fort Drum soldier has reported him missing.

Private First Class Cameron Pendergrass is assigned to the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team.

According to, Pendergrass' family said the Long Island man was home on leave recently.

He left Shelter Island to head back to Fort Drum on July 15, but he didn't return, according to the report.

Police in Shelter Island told 7 News they don't believe Pendergrass has met with foul play.

The Army said his official duty status has not changed since he reported to Fort Drum on November 26, 2012.

According to, Pendergrass' mother received a text message, apparently from her son.

Laura Anne Marcello, Pendergrass' aunt, was quoted as saying, "The message said 'Mom, I'm okay.'"

She was also quoted as saying that Pendergrass was "depressed" and "didn't know how to handle it, by going back."
