Feedback: Former Soldier Flies Flag Upside Down...Again
It's a form of political protest.
By flying one of two American flags upside down outside her home in Copenhagen, a former Fort Drum soldier is sending a message that she disapproves of President Obama.
This isn't the first time.
In December of last year, Melissa Coss flew both American flags upside down to protest the president's re-election.
But, at the time she was a soldier, and now she's out of the military.
The US Flag Code states that flying an American flag upside down is an official sign of distress.
That's just the message Melissa Coss wants to send.
Although she wasn't available for comment Wednesday, she told 7 News in the past that she believes the president is trying to destroy the country and she's expressing her freedom of speech.
Nonetheless, it's a move that has divided the community.
"I think it's a disgrace to all of our vets. My dad was a vet, I was one, my brother, my kids are all in the service, and it's just a disgrace to them," said neighbor Jim Hall.
"We pledge allegiance to the flag, you carry flags in parades, and she has the gall to fly one upside down," said Ruth Hall, another neighbor.
Others say it's her opinion and she has every right to express it.
"She has a right to do it. It's freedom of speech. It's an expression she's doing by the flag being upside down," said neighbor Mark Souva.
So it depends on how you look at this - disgracing the flag, or speaking your mind?
Now that Coss is a private citizen, the only backlash she'll face is from the community she lives in.
