Some Fort Drum families are relieved to hear a child care center on post may not close after all.

Officials are now saying they may get enough money to keep the Memorial Child Development Center open.

Last week, Fort Drum announced it would temporarily close the facility because of the Defense Department civilian hiring freeze.

"It would be a relief for family members that are already stressed out because their spouse is just recently deployed and it's just another thing for them to worry about. I know that if they can avoid closing the center, it would be greatly appreciated by many," said Mary Payant, who utilizes the center.

The center was expected to shut its doors on February 8 so its employees can provide full-time daycare elsewhere on post.

On Tuesday, Fort Drum announced it may get enough resources to keep the facility open.

A spokesperson says it's not a done deal yet, but Fort Drum is optimistic the center will stay open.
