A funeral service and burial with full military honors are being held Thursday for a Fort Drum soldier who died after his unit was attacked in Afghanistan last month.

Sgt. Shawn Farrell's body arrived home Wednesday in Accord in Ulster County. Visitation for friends and the public started at 10 a.m. Thursday at Skate Time in Accord, with a funeral service to follow at the roller skating rink.

The 24-year-old will be buried at the nearby Krumville Cemetery.

Military officials say Farrell died April 28 from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

The 10th Mountain Division soldier joined the Army in 2008 after graduating from Rondout Valley High School.

Farrell is survived by his wife and parents.
