The commander of the 10th Mountain Division is getting ready to head to Afghanistan with 900 Fort Drum soldiers.

About 300 soldiers from the 10th Sustainment Brigade will deploy and 600 soldiers from 10th Mountain Division Headquarters will leave.

Major General Stephen Townsend is going with them.

A deployment ceremony was held on post Thursday.

"Our goal is to train the Afghan security forces, advise them and when necessary, assist them," said Townsend.

Townsend says Brigadier General Mike Howard will take over while he is away.
