With $85 billion in across the board spending cuts due to take effect this Friday, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says those cuts "are going to devastate New York."
Gillibrand addressed the cuts, known as sequestration, during an appearance in Massena last Friday.
"There are reasonable reforms we can put in place to avert these drastic cuts," she said.
"These cuts are going to devastate New York. It's going to hurt our military readiness, it's going to hurt the families of our military. It's going to hurt civilian workers, it's really going to be a drag on our economy."
As 7 News and others have reported over the last week, the cuts may idle civilian workers at Fort Drum one day a week and cause other cuts on post. In addition, they'll likely have an effect - though how much and how fast is unknown - on programs that aid the needy.
The New York Times reported Sunday that governors from both parties are warning of widespread, damaging consequences if the cuts go through.
