Gouverneur Native Dies In North Carolina Accident

A 19 year old Marine from Gouverneur is dead following a car accident in North Carolina.

A 2012 graduate of Gouverneur Central School, Skyler Way was found dead Tuesday night.

His mother, Shannon Way, spoke with 7 News by phone from her home in Gouverneur.

She said Skyler, who was stationed at Camp Lejeune, had not been in contact with anyone since around 9:50 p.m. Monday.

Shannon said she filed a missing persons report through the Marine Corps the next morning.

At around 4 a.m. Wednesday, the local state police called to inform her that her son had been found dead.

According to news reports in North Carolina, Private First Class Way and a fellow Marine were found dead Tuesday night in a submerged vehicle in a canal off Catfish Lake Road in Craven County.

Shannon Way said her son was engaged to a Gouverneur woman and loved wrestling, football, hunting and fishing.

She said Skyler even enjoyed racing cars at Evans Mills Speedway.

After graduating from high school, Skyler decided to become a Marine.

He graduated from boot camp in December 2012.

In addition to his mother, Skyler leaves behind his father, Daniel, three sisters, a brother and a fiancee.

Shannon Way wants people to remember her son as both a Marine and a civilian and she asked that we use photos of him in uniform and in civilian clothing.

Funeral arrangements are not complete.
