Holiday Mail for Heroes Helps Brighten The Season
The holidays can be a difficult time for members of the military stationed overseas or those in veterans hospitals.
That's why St, Lawrence County Clerk Mary Lou Rupp is joining in a campaign that collects holiday cards with personalized greetings for soldiers.
"It's just got to be a lonely time for them and I think it gives people locally an opportunity to say thank you," said Rupp.
The Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign is sponsored by the American Red Cross and was launched locally last year by state Senator Patty Ritchie.
Last year nearly 2,200 holiday cards were mailed to those military personnel serving overseas.
"It gives them the knowledge that they're being appreciated," said Rupp.
Officials say those wanting to send a touch of the north country to our troops this holiday season should not include envelopes, letters or photos.
The cards can be dropped off by a November 14 deadline at the county clerk's office or Department of Motor Vehicles offices as well as one of Senator Ritchie's district offices in Ogdensburg, Watertown or Oswego.
