Local Economy Receives $1.6 Billion From Fort Drum, Army Officials SayFort Drum had an overall impact of $1.6 billion on the north country economy in 2011. That's according to the 2011 Fort Drum economic impact statement released Monday. Army officials say $1,633,341,987 was leveraged in support of the 19,978 soldiers and 26,671 family members who call Fort Drum and the north country home. According to the report, the Army post has had a total impact of almost $17 billion since 1988. "Since 1988 our investment in this community - our home - exceeds $16 billion," said said Col. Noel T. Nicolle, Fort Drum's garrison commander. "But as much it's not this investment alone that makes us one of the top installations for soldiers who reenlist to stay," he said. "We are an Army Community of Excellence because the north country appreciates the service provided by our soldiers, families and civilians as much as our economic impact." Fort Drum is northern New York's largest employer with a total annual payroll of $1.2 billion for its nearly 25,000 soldiers and civilian employees. In addition, there are over 2,300 retirees from all military branches living in the area who are paid a total of over $45 million a year. Fort Drum also has a large impact on local education with area school districts receiving almost $22 million in federal impact aid. Fort Drum also gave over $721,000 in tuition assistance to local colleges, which helps pay for the tuition of about 525 active-duty soldiers who attend college locally. |
