Lowville VFW Hosts POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony

"You are not forgotten" - That was the message of the crowd that gathered to honor former American prisoners of war and remember the more than 83,000 military members still missing in action with a ceremony at the VFW post in Lowville Friday night.

It was held as part of National P-O-W/M-I-A Recognition Day, and featured several speakers.

Organizers say there was one important takeaway from the whole thing:

"Some compassion for the people, the families of these POW/MIAs, because we still have a lot of them out there," said Elsie Keefer, New York State Americanism/Patriotic Instructor for the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Also during this ceremony: a call to act and raise public awareness in the ongoing battle to stop military and veteran suicides.

September is the national VFW organization's Military Suicide Prevention Month.
