Military Kids May Benefit From New School Standards

Indian River High School senior Danielle Moreno knows all about the stress that comes along with changing schools.

Because of her father's military service, she has moved five times.

"You just have to get there and figure it out," she said.

Danielle says it's easy to fall behind.

That's because each state does education a little differently - until now.

New York, along with 45 other states, are transitioning to something called Common Core State Standards.

That means students across the country will learn the same things at the same time.

So, when a military kid moves from one state to another, it's more likely they'll know what's going on.

"It will be good for kids once they come into school and you know they'll feel good about, okay, I know this stuff," said 5th grade teacher Jamie Sweeney.

Teachers say anything that makes the transition easier for military kids is a good thing.

"It effects them behaviorally. It effects them emotionally and obviously academically as well," said 2nd grade teacher Kristen Jetty.

Danielle says the change to Common Core will make life easier on students like her.

"I would no longer have to worry about or any other kid would worry about whether they have the requirements to graduate or anything like that," she said.

Danielle could see the benefits of Common Core soon since she's set to move again in November.
