Military Matters: Hump Day Hot Dogs

The mission of the USO Fort Drum is to lift the spirits of the troops. 

Every Wednesday the USO accomplishes that mission with an event called Hump Day Hot Dogs.

Hundreds of soldiers flood the USO each Wednesday and line up for a free hot dog.

"Myself and a lot of others tell our battle buddies, 'Hey, the USO has free food.  You don't have to go to the DFAC (Dining Facility) and eat the same, plain, boring thing again," said Specialist Micah Jones.

Instead, they come kick back at the USO. 

Soldiers each get a free hot dog and plenty of other snacks to refuel on their lunch break.

"I think everyone always gets excited about hot dogs and Hot Dog Wednesday.  It's always the same thing every Wednesday," said Specialist Brooke Fry.

So what about the funny name, Hump Day Hot Dogs?

"it's the middle of the week, it's a struggle, you know, and you want to have a bright spot in your week, something to look forward to, something to get over the hump.  Come to the USO and have a great time in the middle of the day," said Karen Clark, director of USO Fort Drum.

A different north country business sponsors Hump Day Hot Dogs each week. 

It takes 10 volunteers to cook up and serve both the hot dogs and a good time.

"Everybody has a smile on their face.  Even when I'm having a bad day, everyone here makes me happy," said Fry.

This popular event brings in about 200 soldiers each week.
