Military Matters: Ogdensburg AmVets Want To help Needy VeteranThe Ogdensburg AmVets are looking for a needy St. Lawrence County veteran and are asking for the community's help. Since 1944, the American Veterans organization, also known as AmVets, has provided leadership, advocacy and service to men and women who have served in our nation's military. It's a mission the Ogdensburg AmVets Post 19 and its ladies auxiliary take to heart. "I think it's just as important for our post and our auxiliary as it is for the veteran," said Charlene Romano, the post's Americanism officer, "because we want to tell them thank you." Now, through the group's Help a Veteran project, they're offering a sort of thank-you gift. They raised $1,000 from a recent dinner and variety show to put toward a hand-up for one deserving local vet. "What we hope to do is find a needy veteran that needs something done," Susan House said, "like a car fixed, maybe a ramp for his house to get in and out of, maybe storm windows, maybe a storm door - something that they cannot afford." Veterans seeking services are invited to write a letter stating what they need and why. Letters can be sent by others on behalf of needy veterans. "We know a lot of veterans have a lot of pride, and they won't ask for help even if they want to," Romano said, "so we're asking for family and friends to write in for them if they want to." "We have a panel that's going to choose the neediest one and we're going to try to help them the best we can," House said. In order to be considered, letters need to be sent by August 1.
