Women Soldiers Support Group

-Eight-week support group, every Wednesday, beginning October 12
Today's female Soldiers face many different concerns: marriage and relationships, deployment, changing roles, child care, living as a dual military Family, and other challenging issues specific to women in the military. If you are a Soldier who could benefit from sharing these issues with other women, Behavioral Health has the program for you. It's an eight-week Women Soldiers' Group that meets from 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday morning beginning Oct. 12 in the Behavioral Health Clinic, Bldg. P-36. Sowing the Seeds of Hope – A Look into Survival: The Susan Still Story
-9 a.m.-11:30 a.m., Multi-Purpose Auditorium
Susan Still is a Women’s Rights Activist who speaks on behalf of those whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence. Ms. Still is a survivor of 24 years of physical and mental abuse and a landmark court case that handed her husband the longest sentence given for the crime of domestic violence where the victim survived. Susan speaks about the warning signs, and the importance of breaking free from abusive relationships. This seminar will take place at the Fort Drum Multi-Purpose Auditorium. October 28
Fort Dum 6th Annual Haunted Hayride
-6 p.m.-10 p.m., Remington Park
Beware… and come if you dare to The Haunted Hayride at Remington Park. Creepy things are there to scare as you ride through Remington Park on one of the tractor drawn trolleys. Walk through the haunted pavilion and cemetery then scurry back across the spooky bridge to check out the creepy animal exhibit presented by the zoo at Thompson Park. A little monster’s fun zone is available for kids 12 and under with tamer activities for younger children. Additional treats include group photos, snacks and drinks, and a bonfire for marshmallow roasting. Patrons can catch the shuttle to Remington Park from Mountain Community Homes Community Centers or Magrath Sports Complex. This event is free to all DoD ID card holders. SAC Monster Mash

This free event for youth in grades 1 – 6 held at the School Age Center at 10795 Chapel Drive. Music, dancing, crafts, costumes, haunted house, and snacks will be offered at this seasonal event. Framing Class

-Instruction fee: $20, plus materials
Attend two afternoon classes to learn how to frame pictures or prints. Bring in an item to frame (no bigger than 16x20), learn how to single cut opening in mat, cut frame stock and glass, the put it all together. Some materials are available in the Arts & Crafts resale store. Must register and pre-pay prior to class. Contact: 772-5606.

Photo categories are People, Military Life, Nature & Landscapes, Animals, Still Life, Design Elements, Digital Darkroom, and Monochrome. Enter your best images to compete against the top photographers in the Army and win cash awards.

McEwen Library Dress A Turkey Contest
-November 1-30
The McEwen Library Annual Dress-A-Turkey Contest returns. Dress up or color the cartoon turkey available at McEwen Library then return your creation to participate in the competition. Entries will be displayed in the library for popular vote. This event if for all ages and you can obtain an entry form and complete list of rules at the McEwen Library during regular hours. Entries will be accepted beginning on November 1 and continue through November 30. Voting will run from December 1 through 10. For more information, call Allen Goudie at 772-9099.

Fort Drum Thrift Shop Now Open Wednesdays
-Normal business hours are now 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and the first Saturday of each month.
Consignments are taken each day business day from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Thrift Shop also needs volunteers. Hours are very flexible. The Fort Drum Thrift Shop is located in Bldg. P-55, corner of Quartermaster Road and First Street. For more information, call 772-7189.
 
Learn to Live Gluten Free

November is “Gluten Free Awareness” month. Are you gluten sensitive or know someone who is? This free seminar presented by Katherine Robertson, RN MSN (LTC ret.) will teach you what it takes to live gluten free. Family Safe and Strong Day

This event showcases exhibits featuring winter sports such as cross country ski, snowshoe, ice fishing, fitness programs and more to kick off the winter recreational season. Demonstrations and safety classes where you can learn skills from winter driving safety to compressive CPR. Fitness classes such as Zumba. Stroller PT, Spin, Aqua Zumba, and Cross Fit will also be available. A Family Dance party will begin at 5:15 and run through 10 pm with a Zumbathon, and yoga/stretch classes. Before You Begin & Beginning Quilt Class

-Three sessions: 11/4, 11/11, 11/18
In this three-part class you will learn basic abilities for piecing a quilt top such as cutting with rotary cutters, squaring up your fabrics, types of rulers, ¼” seams, pressing, why cotton fabric is used and terminology associated with quilting. Prerequisite to take this class is basic current sewing skills with ability to fix sewing machine problems if they occur. This class will meet 3 times, consecutive Fridays; a list of supplies will be given out at the time of registration. You will make a simple lap/baby quilt. Class instruction fee is $40. An event to welcome all Veteran's from across New York State will be held at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. A parade will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds followed by an exhibition for Veteran's in the Center for Progress Building from 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Fort Drum and the Northern New York-Fort Drum AUSA Chapter will be present at the event.

In My Shoes” Veterans Day Weekend Encore Performances

Three more performances of the award winning docudrama “In My Shoes” have been scheduled to celebrate Veteran's Day, after its successful run in June. Click here to view the flyer. In My Shoes”, written by local playwright Craig Thornton, tells the real stories from real teenagers about their lives and experiences as children of a parent deployed in a combat zone. Written and performed in the docudrama format to insure the authenticity of the Indian River High School students' stories and voices, “In My Shoes” has been embraced by the Fort Drum community and the civilian community alike. It was recently featured in a national story on CNN. Tickets: $7 General Admission, $5 Seniors, Military, Students.
