Drone Training With Live Ammo This Week At Drum
You may hear the sound of "high explosive bombs" on Fort Drum this week.
The New York Air National Guard's 174th Attack Wing based out of Syracuse will be using live ammunition this week on Fort Drum's range as it trains in the use of 'remotely piloted aircraft' - drones.
The exercise will happen both in the afternoon and evening, according to a statement from the 174th.
"North Country residents may notice the sound of high explosive bombs at the range, especially with cooler temperatures in the evenings," according to the statement.
"When air is cold, it is also more dense and a better conductor of sound over distance."
This training marks the first time the 174th has used drones and live ammunition at Fort Drum, although training with practice rounds has gone on for most of a year.
