Soldiers With North Country Ties Killed in AfghanistanThe war in Afghanistan has claimed the lives of of three soldiers with ties to the north country. The three men were assigned to the 444th Engineer Company which is headquartered in Oswego. The unit is an element of the 178th Engineer Battalion of the 412th Theater Engineer Command. All three died when their Humvee was struck by a roadside bomb. Venne was a student at St. Lawrence University in Canton when the 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred and joined the Army shortly afterwards. Jayne, a Corning, NY native, was home on 10-day leave until last Monday, when he returned to Afghanistan.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is directing all flags on state buildings to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday in honor of the soldiers. Most Popular |
