Jefferson County is set to receive $200,000 to start a peer counseling program for veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

The plan is to begin peer support groups where veterans can talk to other service members who share similar experiences.

State Senator Patty Ritchie (R-48th District) says the program is key, as soldiers continue to return home from Afghanistan.

"When they come back home, it should be first and foremost at the front of all our minds to make sure that we have the support available for them so that they can get accustomed back into their day to day lives," she said.

It is unclear right now which county organization will receive the money and run the peer support program.
