U.S. Senator Charles "Chuck" Schumer is urging the Defense Department to choose New York as a site for a missile defense system.

The Pentagon is considering placing a missile interceptor on the east coast.

Schumer (D. - NY) says Fort Drum or the former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome are uniquely capable to do the job.

Local leaders say it could mean a lot of new jobs.

"When you have the state's senior Senator out there advocating two positions, in particular, Fort Drum, that increases your odds," said Carl McLaughlin of the Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization.

McLaughlin says a $25 million early warning system is being built on Fort Drum which bodes well for a missile interceptor site.
