Slain Fort Drum Soldier Nominated For Silver Star, Newspaper Says
A Fort Drum soldier is reportedly being honored posthumously for sacrificing himself to shield a Polish soldier from a suicide bomb attack.
Ollis died August 28 during an attack by insurgents on Forward Operating base Ghanzi, where he was stationed.
According to an Army report, the base was breached with a car bomb and attacked with grenades, rocket, mortars and small-arms fire.
Several insurgents with suicide bomb vests entered the base through the opening caused by the car bomb. One of them detonated his vest, killing Ollis.
The Silver Star is the U.S. military's third highest decoration for valor.
Ollis' nomination is working its way through his chain of command, the newspaper says.
The 24 year old infantryman from Staten Island was with the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team.
