The state Capitol saluted Fort Drum for the third year in a row Tuesday.

It was 10th Mountain Division Day, which is hosted each year by Sen. Patty Ritchie.

The Fort Drum color guard opened up Tuesday's Senate session and lawmakers heard from Brigadier General Michael Howard, who spoke about the important connection between the Army post and the north country.

Howard was standing in for Fort Drum commander Major General Stephen Townsend, who is deployed in Afghanistan.

"There’s a reason Fort Drum soldiers love the North Country," Howard said. "In my view it’s because they are so uniquely embedded in the North Country.

“In my 28 years of service I moved 13 times and lived on nine Army installations," he said. "Nowhere were the installation and community as intertwined and dependent on each other as they are at Fort Drum."
