Story Of Fallen Soldier's Father Inspires CMA Song Of The Year
Country Music's Song of the Year was inspired by the story of the father of a fallen Fort Drum soldier.
"I Drive Your Truck" was named the industry's top song at Wednesday night's Country Music Awards.
It's inspired by Paul Monti, who drives the pickup truck his son, Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, owned.
The younger Monti died in Afghanistan when his patrol was attacked in June 2006.
He was a member of the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.
He died trying to save a wounded fellow soldier. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2009.
Paul Monti told the story of how he drive's his son's truck to feel close to him in an interview broadcast on National Public Radio on Memorial Day in 2011.
Songwriter Connie Carrington -- one-third of the team that wrote the song -- heard the story and was inspired to write "I Drive Your Truck."
The song is performed by country music star Lee Brice.
