"Sweet" Girl Brightens Soldiers' Day With Cookies

Annabelle Sweet certainly lives up to her last name.

Just ask soldiers at Fort Drum, who inevitably describe her actions as "sweet."

The Copenhagen Central School second-grader handed out 100 boxes of donated Girl Scout cookies Wednesday to USO Fort Drum.

"Soldiers do so much for us and so I thought I could give them a cookie so they can smile," said Annabelle.

Annabelle is a Brownie.

While selling Girl Scout cookies last year, she decided to ask would-be customers if they'd like to buy a box to donate to our troops.

She collected 60 boxes last year.

This year, she gathered 100 boxes, or $450 worth of cookies.

Her father, the commander of the 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, couldn't be more proud.

"I think being around soldiers and being the daughter of a soldier, she really appreciates what soldiers do and this is her way of kind of saying thank you," said Lieutenant Colonel Zeke Sweet.

Every Wednesday the USO holds an event called Hump Day Hot Dogs.

On this particular Wednesday, soldiers not only got free hot dogs, but also got free Girl Scout cookies.

"We pretty much at a whole box in a matter of five minutes," said Specialist Erik Bessey, a soldier.

Another soldier, Sergeant Jason Chandler, grabbed a box of Samoas, his favorite variety of Girl Scout cookie.

"I appreciate it a lot and I know my fellow soldiers appreciate it," he said.

USO officials say Annabelle's actions serve as an inspiration for others.

"It doesn't matter what age you are or what size you are. It doesn't matter you live, you can still support our troops and I love that Annabelle has decided to do this," said Karen Clark, director of USO Fort Drum.

Annabelle is planning to collect cookie donations again in 2014.

She hopes to be able to hand out 200 boxes next year.
